Liverpool were planning a €100million bid for Fede Valverde earlier this summer

According to the Bernabeu Digital (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool were considering making a €100million bid for Real Madrid star Federico Valverde earlier in this summer transfer window.

The Anfield outfit were planning on signing the player before he signed a new contract at Real Madrid but were stopped in their tracks.

The 23-year-old has been incredibly impressive for the Spanish outfit for the last couple of seasons and was a key part of the Madrid squad that reached the semi-final of the Champions League last year– a tie they were able to reach after beating Liverpool in the quarter-final.

Valverde made 33 appearances across all competitions last season, including featuring 24 times in La Liga as the Spanish outfit failed to retain their league trophy by 2 points. However, the Merseyside club’s interest in the player is well justified.

The Uruguayan can play anywhere across the midfield line while he can also play as a right-back, something he showcased by his performances last season.

The 23-year-old would have provided a lot of energy into Liverpool’s midfield, however, he recently put pen to a new contract this summer, committing his future at the Spanish capital until 2027.

The Reds, who lost Gini Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer, could be keen on adding another player in the centre of the pitch. However, given that the club already possess the likes of Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, Naby Keita, and Curtis Jones, they might not regret missing out on Valverde.

Moreover, the emergence of young Harvey Elliott has also been a bonus for Klopp and the midfielder has already made his way into the starting lineup, as evidenced by his start against rivals Chelsea on Saturady.
