“Had interest”- Romano claims Liverpool missed out on the chance to sign 22-year-old striker this summer

Liverpool failed to sign Patson Daka as they could not offload two of their players

Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano (h/t Liverpool Echo) stated that Liverpool were denied a chance to sign Patson Daka from RB Salzburg due to their failure to shift two fringe players during the summer transfer window.

However, it is claimed that the Reds were unable to move on Xherdan Saqiri and Divock Origi early on in the window when they would have made a move for Daka.

Patson Daka was linked with a move to Liverpool who failed to sign the player from RB Salzburg.

The 22-year old Zambian international was at the peak of his power in the Austrian Bundesliga with RB Salzburg. Daka, in his last two seasons with Salzburg, scored 51 goals in 59 appearances in the league and also handed out 10 assists.

Liverpool’s failure to offload players this summer saw Leicester City sign the in-form striker from Salzburg for a reported fee of £23million following swift and clear negotiation between the two clubs involved. The player, however, has not made a start for the Foxes in their opening three fixtures.

Romano has stated that Liverpool had the chance to sign Daka this summer. He said on his podcast:

Patson Daka despite interest from Liverpool completed a move to Leicester City.

“Liverpool this summer had a strategy, sell players and then eventually sign players.

“If they sold Shaqiri or Origi in the first days of June then they had a chance to sign Patson Saka because they were interested in him.

“They never made an official bid but they had interest in this striker from Salzburg.”

Liverpool also lost Georginio Wijnaldum this summer after the Dutch midfielder did not renew his contract with the Reds. He made a switch to Paris Saint Germain as a free agent and since then, Liverpool did not sign a replacement midfielder throughout the summer window.
