According to Manchester Evening News, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has described the spending spree of Manchester United and Man City as a ‘circus’. The Reds had a relatively quiet transfer window as they only signed defender Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig this summer.
The signing of the centre-back was key for Jurgen Klopp, as his team struggled last season with a number of defenders out due to injuries including Virgil van Dijk. The club, though, did not have much interest in spending huge sums of money in what was described
as an inflated market by the Liverpool manager.Man City, meanwhile, signed Jack Grealish for £100million, while United signed Jadon Sancho for £73million followed by the signing of Raphael Varane who cost £34million. Apart from this, Premier League giants Chelsea also spent big on Romelu Lukaku this summer.
However, Liverpool boss Klopp defended the club’s decision to not spend big this summer and opened up about other clubs transfer business, saying:
“I signed up for doing things this way and in that time we’ve been quite successful. We’ve won a couple of trophies doing things exactly but when we get asked why you do that? We thought it made sense that we sign up our squad that we already have here, and we did that.
“That is not as spectacular as all the rest around, I cannot change that because you cannot do transfer business just to be in circus. Honestly, I couldn’t care less what other clubs are doing.”
Liverpool, despite failing to make major signings beyond Konate this summer, have started well in the Premier League. They remain unbeaten in the League after the 3-0 victory away at Leeds United. Klopp’s team successfully saw off the challenge at Elland Road and are firmly in title contention with Chelsea, Man United & City.
