Jamie Redknapp hails Liverpool ace Thiago; hits back at Spaniard’s critics
According to the Daily Mail, Jamie Redknapp has hit back at critics for not understanding the role of Thiago Alcantara’ role in the Liverpool midfield department. The Spaniard put in an impressive performance after starting the game in the middle of the park alongside Fabinho & Harvey Elliott against Leeds.
Thiago made a switch to Liverpool from Bayern Munich in 2020 after winning a treble with the German Champions. The Spaniard, however, had a difficult time settling in the team and could not perform to his usual standard in the first season with the Reds.
Thiago made only 24 appearances for the Premier League giants last league campaign and scored a single goal in what was a difficult first season for the Spaniard.
However, Thiago sprung back to life for Liverpool at Elland Road as he showed glimmers of his true quality in the 3-0 win for the Reds. The Spaniard had a goal disallowed early in the first half for offside and also set one up for Sadio Mane.
Now, former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp was left impressed by Thiago’s performances and believed the criticism towards the player last season was unfair. Speaking after the game, the former Reds’ star turned pundit said:
“This guy is one of the best technicians you’ll see in the world football don’t matter what kind of pressure you put him under, he’s never panicked.
“He is incredible to watch and it did my head in last year listening to people who don’t understand the midfield role. It’s because people are always looking for a scapegoat. Someone to say it’s their fault.”
Thiago made his first start this season against Leeds and justified Jurgen Klopp’s decision to trust him with the responsibility in midfield. Liverpool’s win against Leeds was overshadowed by the horrific injury to Harvey Elliott. With James Milner also having fitness issues, Thiago is expected to get more regular game-time going forward.
