Liverpool urged to pursue Youri Tielemans over Yves Bissouma
In conversation with Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson feels that Liverpool should pursue the signing of Leicester City star Youri Tielemans ahead of Brighton’s Yves Bissouma.
There is a Gini Wijnaldum shaped hole in the Reds’ squad following the Dutchman’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain. With Harvey Elliott already out injured long term, Liverpool are short of a player in the middle of the park.
While Liverpool did not move to bring in any new midfielders, the Reds are not lacking for options in the Premier League. Both Bissouma and Tielemans provide intriguing options for Jurgen Klopp to consider.
The Merseysiders had a pretty quiet transfer window with Ibrahima Konate the only big-name signing. The club will therefore be urged to make a greater impact in the next transfer window. The midfield has been identified as an area where the Reds could use some improvement.
Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper shared his thoughts on the situation and has revealed who he thinks Liverpool should consider.
“I think Tielemans would be a better option for Liverpool than Bissouma. Does Bissouma fit the bill for Klopp? “
He believes the Reds are light in the midfield area and could move to add reinforcements in January or at the very least next summer. A midseason addition could prove to be a catalyst for glory provided we are still in a position to compete.
“They are light in that area now so I do expect them to bring in another body in that position whether it be in January or next summer. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool make moves in January.”
The two contenders!
Tielemans could be the perfect replacement for Wijnaldum with his understanding of the game and two-way threat. The Belgian midfielder joined the Foxes for a club-record £35m from Monaco in 2019 and has since evolved into one of the best players in the top flight.
The Belgian has scored 13 goals and provided 15 assists for Leicester City in 93 games in the Premier League. He has gone on to form an integral part of Brendan Roger’s team scoring the decisive goal in last season’s FA Cup final.
While Bissouma may not have any trophies to show for it, he has been equally critical for Graham Potter’s Brighton. The Seagulls find themselves in the dizzying heights of the 4th position after 5 matches this season. The Mali international has been a key driving force behind the solid start.
Bissouma has made 91 appearances for Brighton in the Premier League. His defensive solidity and rigidity have helped Brighton maintain composure in the middle of the park. A strong season will only see the big clubs sit up and take notice of his abilities.

Tielemans can be thought of as a more dynamic option as compared to Bissouma. With Naby Keita and Thiago Alcantara picking up injuries in the early part of the campaign, Klopp would like to have another attack-minded midfielder in their ranks. Whether he will move for Tielemans and prove Robinson a prophet remains to be seen.
