Fabrizio Romano reveals PSG’s Erstwhile desire to sign Jordan Henderson
Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Paris Saint-Germain wanted to sign the 31-year-old Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, before the prospect of Lionel Messi coming to PSG became a reality.
Speaking on The Here We Go Podcast (h/t Givemesport), Romano said the following about the situation:
“For Jordan Henderson, I want to say, behind the scenes PSG were thinking of Jordan Henderson as a potential new signing before the Leo Messi opportunity, because Leo Messi was an opportunity, it was not something planned.
Romano further added that before acquiring Messi, the Ligue 1 outfit were on the lookout for a midfielder.
“Before signing Messi, they were looking for a midfielder. Pogba was more than complicated because Man United wanted to keep him, and Paris Saint-Germain were looking for Jordan Henderson when he had no agreement with Liverpool over a new contract.”
Henderson has been absolutely instrumental in Liverpool’s central midfield. The England international provides fluidity on the field, covering vulnerable areas for the Reds and opens up spaces for the attackers to be on the offensive, particularly while counter-attacking.
Not only this simultaneous offensive playmaking ability and defensive solidity is a rare combination to find, the Liverpool captain has time and again, proved consequential when it matters the most.
The latest stunning half-volley against AC Milan in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League is just an example that when Henderson has the ability to step up when his team needs him the most.
Henderson came to Liverpool from Sunderland in 2011 and has recently made his 400th appearance for the Reds across all competitions, becoming only the 27th player in Liverpool’s history to reach this landmark. Henderson is also the first player since Steven Gerard in October 2007, to have achieved this milestone in a Liverpool shirt.
