Don Hutchison urges Liverpool and Manchester United to go big on Kalvin Phillips
According to ESPN via Anfield Watch (h/t Leeds Live), Don Hutchison has urged Liverpool and Manchester United to make a move for Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips.
The 25-year-old has been instrumental to his boyhood club Leeds United’s rise to the Premier League. He has since established himself as a top-flight footballer and is today amongst the best in the business.
Hutchison believes the midfielder is now ready for a big move to one of England’s top clubs. His assessment comes after watching the player impress in Leeds’ win over Fulham where Phillips started as a centre-back.
“Kalvin Phillips absolutely blew me away. I watched him live. He played as a centre-back and then whenever Leeds had the ball, he stepped into midfield and played as a midfield player.
Hutchison goes on to gush about the player’s positional awareness and passing ability. He further adds that his sources have already informed him that the big sides will be queueing up to land the player next summer.
“Everything about him told me that he’s not going to be at Leeds for much longer. There is going to be Liverpool and Man United, all the big clubs are going to want him in the summer.”
Leeds meanwhile appear to be in no mood to lose their star man. The Yorkshire giants have presented a new contract to the 25-year-old English midfielder. Phillips for his part appears to be close to penning the fresh terms.
A perfect fit?
Phillips is an intriguing option for Liverpool who will need to add fresh blood to their midfield in the coming windows. Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner are all in their thirties. The duo of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have injury issues and have so far failed to deliver consistently
His ability to play both in midfield and as a centre-back is something the Reds could work with. Henderson or Fabinho usually drop back when in possession, acting as a pseudo-centre-back for the Reds. This often gives them the security needed to unleash their wing-backs.
Phillips has shown himself adept at performing the role. He is certainly someone Jurgen Klopp can look at as a long term replacement for Henderson.

The 25-year-old English international joined Leeds as a youth player, rising through the ranks and making his senior debut in 2015. He has gone from strength to strength since and was amongst England’s star performers at the summer’s Euros.
At 25, he is entering his prime and will do well to play in a side contending for trophies. Leeds for their promise is not there yet. It remains to be seen if Phillips will stay loyal or seek a move away from Elland Road.
