Transfer News: Liverpool show interest in Joao Felix ahead of January transfer window
According to the Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are interested in signing Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window. The Reds’ interest in him could be to strengthen their forward department.
The Portuguese talent will however not come cheap. The Reds would need to fork out around €80 million (£68 million) for his services.
However, with Felix’s contract running until 2026, the English club could be in for a tough ask. With Atleti mounting a title defence, it is highly unlikely that Liverpool would be able to get their hands on the 21-year-old.
Liverpool’s interest in Felix may be a result of last season’s injury plague that weakened their squad. The Merseysiders title challenge could be in serious trouble if any of their forwards get injured this season.
Following Xherdan Shaqiri’s move to Olympique Lyonnais for about £9.5 million, Jurgen Klopp’s side is pretty stretched in the forward line. Both Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino have had their moments but have failed to deliver consistently.
Liverpool have first-hand experience of how a series of injuries can derail the chances of silverware. The club would be doing its best to avoid a repeat by solidifying the squad depth. Given that they failed to do so in the summer, January presents an opportunity to correct it.

Liverpool are also expected to lose Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita in January because of the African Cup of Nations. But Klopp would be relieved that they would be out for only two Premier League games.
However, the Merseyside club would be worried about the injuries their players can pick up while away for their nations. Having a proper squad depth across all areas could help in mitigating the risks associated with such situations.
