Transfer News: Liverpool are leading the race to sign Rennes winger Jeremy Doku
According to the Belgian journalist Alexandre Braeckman (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are at the ‘front of the queue’ to sign the Rennes forward Jeremy Doku. The 19-year-old is coming off the back of an explosive Euro 2020 campaign.
The youngster turned heads when he showed his quality for Belgium during the summer tournament. His exposure questions those who claimed that Belgium’s golden generation was nearing its end.
The winger got high praise from the likes of Gab Marcotti and Julien Laurens following his performance against Italy in the UEFA Nations League third-place playoff. They said that “he ran the show in the second half” in Belgium’s 2-1 loss at the hands of Italy.
Braeckman thinks that a deal involving the 19-year-old and the Merseyside club could happen in 2022. Braeckman wrote on his Twitter handle (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“Doku is in Rennes and could go away this summer (Liverpool best placed at this stage)”.
The talented youngster was close to joining Jurgen Klopp’s side in early 2018 but decided to stay at Anderlecht. The Merseysiders are due a buildup and a move now would afford the youngster more chances of first-team football.
The English club were linked with the teenager throughout the summer transfer window as Xherdan Shaqiri moved to Lyon. Having failed to bring in a replacement, Jurgen Klopp’s men are understaffed in the position.
Doku has the potential to be more than a backup winger. He could very well be the eventual successor to Sadio Mane in the Liverpool front three.
