Transfer News: Liverpool ahead of Manchester United in the race to land Kalvin Phillips
According to the Daily Star (h/t ESPN), Liverpool are looking to do one over their fierce rivals Manchester United in the race to land Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
Liverpool, who smashed five past the Red Devils on Sunday are looking to strengthen their midfield and want to lure Phillips away from Elland Road.
A key part of Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds side, Phillips took his talents to the international stage with England at this summer’s Euros. This has seen the likes of Liverpool and Man United are vying for his signature.
The Elland Road star would prefer to join Liverpool ahead of Manchester United. Having grown up a Leeds fan, he worries about what a move to United would do to his family – it would also likely ruin his legacy at his home club.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are in the market for a defensive-minded midfielder as they look to mount a serious title charge. As of yet, they have hit a blank.
There are also question marks over Paul Pogba’s future at Old Trafford as his contract expires next summer. Bringing in another midfielder could be a necessity rather than a luxury next summer.
Liverpool for their part also could do with another option in midfield. They are yet to replace Georgio Wijnaldum and landing an Englishman in Phillips is a double win. Not only is he a proven player in the Premier League but adds to the club’s homegrown quota.
Leeds meanwhile appear to be in no mood to lose their star man. The Yorkshire giants have presented a new contract to the 25-year-old English midfielder. Phillips for his part appears to be close to penning the fresh terms.
