“Like a defeat”- Klopp’s verdict as Liverpool drop points at home vs Brighton

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits that the home draw vs Brighton feels akin to a defeat

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp held back nothing in his post-match press conference (h/t Youtube) as his side threw away a two-goal lead at home to draw against Brighton.

Liverpool had an incredible start in the first half but failed to capitalize their moments and control the game in the second half. Brighton for their part were deserving of the spoils and could have left with more if not for Alisson Becker.

Klopp gave his verdict on his team’s performance and admits his side showed better character in the first half, but the body language suddenly changed in the second, and they couldn’t find the solution past Brighton’s defence. In the post-game interview,

he said:

“(In the) first half, we had incredible moments, we played some of the best stuff.”

He also praised Sadio Mane’s second goal (disallowed), saying he and his team worked six years to score a goal like that. While it may not have counted, it showed Liverpool’s pressing at its finest.

Klopp had no qualms in admitting that Brighton had his side’s number in the second half. The Reds were poor in possession and it showed.

“The best way to defend against Brighton is obviously to have the ball and to do some clever stuff with it, and we didn’t do that in the second half.”

Jordan Henderson (L) and Sadio Mane (R) scored on the night.

Though it’s a draw and the Reds received one point out of it, Jurgen Klopp believes now the standards are so high for them that this draw feels like a defeat

“Feels like a defeat.”

It was undoubtedly a tough encounter for the 54 years old manager, more demanding than the Kopites would have imagined. But Jurgen Klopp seems optimistic about finding a solution. Having fallen further behind Chelsea in the Premier League title race, the Reds cannot afford to down their tools now.

Fair play to Klopp for giving Brighton their due while also calling out his side for the disappointing performance. Sometimes there is no defending the indefensible.
