According to UEFA.com (h/t Liverpool Echo), Uruguayan superstar Luis Suarez has spoken about the added strength his former side Liverpool have ahead of their clash against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
Luis Suarez is set to return to his old home where he established himself as a world-class striker. The Uruguayan international spent 3 years at Anfield, scoring a magnificent 82 goals in 133 games for the Reds.
As someone who has worn the red shirt, Suarez is well aware of the power of Anfield. The Arena is one of the most electric in the world and will give any visiting side a run for their money.
Suarez has acknowledged just that and admits the Anfield crowd act as an unofficial 12th man for the home side. He goes on to add that Atletico Madrid will not have it easy and should be on their toes.
“We have to pay attention because, besides using those strengths, they have an extra player, which is the Anfield crowd, and that makes things harder for us.”
The 34-year-old veteran has added experience of feeling the Anfield crowd’s impact during his time with Barcelona. The Catalans threw away a 3-0 lead at the same venue in the 2019 UEFA Champions League semifinals. Suarez started on that day and could only watch on in horror at what was unfolding before his eyes.
The Uruguayan goes on to add that he felt the support of the fans
during his time at Anfield. Hopefully, there will be little for him to cheer when we take to the field on Wednesday night. The 34 years old player maintained his goalscoring abilities after joining Atletico Madrid. He was influential in their La Liga win last season.
Liverpool are currently at the top of the so-called group of death with three wins in three so far. A win at Anfield against Atletico will all but guarantee their progress to the round of 16.
Given the injuries they have had this season, getting over the line quickly will help Jurgen Klopp give his best players a breather in the final two matchdays.
The former Barcelona player would be silly to expect a warm welcome from the supporters of Liverpool that adored him once. With Antoine Griezmann suspended, it remains to be seen if the veteran South American will start the game.
