Former Liverpool star Jordan Ibe opens up on battling depression

According to sportBIBLE (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Liverpool star, Jordan Ibe has opened up on his fight against depression.

The 25-year-old was once among the best talents coming through the club. Despite enjoying some success under Jurgen Klopp, he was eventually shipped off to Bournemouth in 2016.

His time with the Cherries did not pan out as expected and Ibe moved to Derby County in 2020. He shared that he had been struggling with his mental health on social media in January while playing for the Rams.

Thankfully Ibe is in a much better position today. He has now opened up on what was a difficult battle for him off the field. He accepts in no uncertain terms that the time period was the darkest in his life.

“It was the darkest time of my life.”

Ibe goes on to admit that it was something he could not keep to himself. The winger had to speak out and is glad to have done so. He admits in no uncertain terms that it was an appeal for help.

“It was a cry for help, to be honest. I felt like I needed to speak out because if not, I don’t know what else could have happened. It’s a good thing that I did.”

Ibe goes on to add that he has been battling depression for four years now. We are glad that he doing much better. He once again shows us the importance of opening up when help is needed. Hopefully, more players will come out and seek the help they need to recover.

“I feel like it was very important that I spoke openly – and to my family.”

Ibe looked destined for great things when he made his Liverpool debut as a 17-year-old. Whether it was because of the depression or not, he looked lost during his time with Bournemouth.

A broken leg has further compounded his career but he continues to recover. Hopefully the dark phase of his life is behind him and we wish him the very best both on and off the field.
