Liverpool players Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were close to joining Bayern Munich

According to German news outlet Bild (h/t Liverpool Echo), Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were ‘offered’ to Bayern Munich before making their way into the Liverpool squad.

No doubt, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have become two of the most lethal strikers in the Premier League for quite some time now. But this wasn’t the case when they first made their Liverpool debut.

Jurgen Klopp completed the signing of the African players in exchange for a reasonable sum. The Reds first secured Mane from Southampton in the summer of 2016 for a fee of £34million. Then they lured Salah from the Italian side Roma in the following year with a price of £36.9m

They weren’t the most exquisite transfers in the world, but the Mersyside management decided to bet on the player’s abilities for the long term future. Their decision has paid off, looking at the recent performances from the duo.

But long before any of this happened, their destiny could have altered if Bayern Munich had secured the deals.

The 29-years old Senegalese footballer was offered to Bayern in 2014 while he was a player for the Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.

Between 2015 and 2017, the Egyptian was also ‘offered’ to Bayern Munich while still playing in Italy. The German team’s board couldn’t anticipate the career growth of the 29-years-old player as they decided not to sign him.

The Die Roten’s management must have regretted this decision as the club Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recently accepted that Salah is breaking grounds and moving up in the elite footballer’s list. In a conversation with ON Time Sports, He compared the former AS Roma player with the likes of Messi and Ronaldo.

“In my opinion, Salah is the [Lionel] Messi of Africa, and of course, he has the skills to play for the best teams in the world. What he [Salah] has achieved can be compared to what Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo did with Barcelona and Real Madrid.”

He accepted that any move from Bayern to lure the world-class player is unlikely. He also stated what would it be like to have such a player in the team.

“At the moment, we don’t plan on signing Salah, but certainly, it would be an honour to have him.”

Having Salah and Mane in the same team is a staggering advantage for the English side. Many teams like Bayern could have secured the players before their breakthrough seasons. But all praise to the Liverpool board for their long-term planning and making sure the deadly African duo ends up at Merseyside.
