Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in disbelief over the Ballon d’Or ranking of Mohamed Salah
According to Mirror, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits to being ‘surprised’ by Mohamed Salah securing only the 7th spot overall on the Ballon d’Or list.
This year’s award was given last night to much pomp and ceremony. Lionel Messi grabbed the prestigious award for a record seventh time ahead of second-placed Robert Lewandowski and third-placed Jorginho.
However, despite having a goal-laden season, Salah fell short and finished seventh in the list. The Egyptian forward’s 17 goals in 18 appearances are quite an achievement in Premier League standards.
In a press conference on Tuesday, the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp suggested that he is finding it difficult to grasp how his star striker didn’t get a better rank.
“I was surprised about his position,”
The 54-year-old manager took a dig at the journalist as he believed they were the ones responsible for such a dismal ranking. Clearly, Klopp does not miss a trick.
“Journalists vote for the Ballon d’Or, so… if you think he should be higher up, you should convince your colleagues!”
Even though he didn’t consider that Salah was robbed out of the prestigious award, he does think that the Egyptian ‘king’ could have finished in a better position.
“And Mo should have been higher up, definitely.”
Even though Klopp could argue that Salah had a magnificent season on paper, the Merseyside team didn’t do exceptionally well the last season. In contrast, the Reds suffered from terrible injury mishaps that hampered the on-field performance. Salah’s heroics in the later part somehow salvaged the season; it wasn’t enough to be treated in the same basket as the other top players.
However, this season the story is entirely different as Salah has become one of the top strikers in the world. He has been scoring goal after goal and putting in awe-inspiring performances consistently. Liverpool, on the other hand, are also doing incredibly well and are in contention for both the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League.

If Salah keeps performing in such fashion until the end of the season and Liverpool successfully acquires significant silverware, the Egyptian would have a powerful claim on the prize next year.
