According to Tuttosport (h/t Liverpool Echo), Chelsea have emerged as the frontrunner ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Gleison Bremer.
The Brazilian has been a reliable and consistent defender for Torino in Serie A. The 24-year-old has already made 16 appearances this season and seemed solid in the back. His incredible performance and leadership qualities also earned him the armband recently.
Liverpool have shown interest in the Brazilian defender in recent times so has Tottenham Hotspur. But, it is believed that Thomas Tuchel’s team now has the upper hand over the two Premier League rivals in the negotiation table for the defender. The Blues are confident about paying his £15m transfer fee, and the signing looks ‘imminent.’
The Reds currently have tremendous depth in the defensive lineup. Last season’s defensive crisis appears to have made Jurgen Klopp overly conscious about the problem. The German manager only made one major signing in the summer, which was also a defender. The arrival of Ibrahima Konaté from RB Leipzig has provided ample options for the backline.
But, last season’s necessity has become this season’s luxury for Klopp. It has however added a new issue into the mix. Even after returning from injury Joe Gomez hasn’t got his starting place back. On the other hand, Konaté has only made eight appearances
this season.Whereas Nathaniel Phillips hasn’t seen much action lately. The British defender is also linked with an away move in recent times.
Understandably, a certain depth is required to cope with the hectic schedule. But the benched players could lose their hopes in the process.
Even though Bremer could make a massive impact in the backline for the Reds, at the current moment, Jurgen Klopp’s team maybe do not require him, and even if the Reds board decides to sign him, Jurgen Klopp would find it difficult to guarantee him regular minutes.
