Championship boss fearful that Liverpool will recall loanee mid-season in January

Paul Heckingbottom is fearful that Liverpool will recall Ben Davies from his loan spell at Sheffield United

According to Examiner Live (h/t Liverpool Echo), Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom has suggested that Liverpool can call back Ben Davies from his loan spell amid rising Covid-19 concerns in their senior team. 

Liverpool signed Ben Davies in 2020 as extensive cover for their injury-ridden defensive line. But Jurgen Klopp didn’t give him any start during the previous season, and in the summer, he was loaned to Sheffield United. 

Meanwhile, the British centre-back has done incredibly well in his loan term with the Blades. The 26-year-old has made 14 appearances for the Championship side and has become a vital player for the squad. 

But the Covid surge in Premier League teams raises the possibility that the Parent clubs would call up their loanees for filling up positions in the squad to avoid games getting cancelled. 

Paul Heckingbottom suggested even though he wants to keep hold of his crucial defender, his team doesn’t hold any control over his future. The Blades manager also revealed that the player is enjoying his stay at the club because of regular game time. 

“A lot of that is out of our control. They are not our players. We’re happy with them, they are happy with the club, so hopefully, we can keep that going forward.”

Heckingbottom also hinted that the two parties that will have the final say are Davies and Liverpool, but Sheffield has no part to play in the process. 

“The player’s feelings will be considered without a doubt, but we’re the club that’s got no say on it; that’s down to the player and parent club.”

Virgil van Dijk missed the previous game after getting positive results in the lateral flow result. Thus, Jurgen Klopp’s team is already short of a key defender who had a massive impact in the past few weeks.

The situation hasn’t reached stability as the Covid-19 cases in the English top-flight are rising every passing day. In such a scenario, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Jurgen Klopp call up Ben Davies for backup.
