Liverpool youngster Tony Gallacher completes permanent move to St. Johnstone

The club’s official website has announced that Liverpool Academy starlet Tony Gallacher has completed a permanent move to Scottish Premiership side St. Johnstone.

The 22-year-old full-back was signed by the Reds in the 2018 January transfer window from Falkirk Football Club, who ply their trade in the Scottish League One. Unfortunately, he could not make the cut at Anfield.

The youngster regularly represented the U23s during his four-year-long spell on Merseyside, and also went on to make one appearance for the senior team when he started the League Cup quarter-final at Aston Villa in December 2019.

The starlet also had a loan spell outside the continent, playing 10 games for Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC during the end of 2020.

The Liverpool Academy has produced a few superstars in the past few years who have paved their own way to first-team action, such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones. It is unfortunate that Gallacher couldn’t replicate that same success under manager Jurgen Klopp.

The young full-back cannot be blamed, of course, with Andy Robertson irreplaceable on the senior teamsheet. Konstantinos Tsimikas has proven to be an able deputy with some encouraging displays this season, most recently against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Gallacher has struggled to impress at Liverpool.

It is encouraging to see Gallacher leave the club to pursue first-team football elsewhere, as it takes some bravery to leave top-flight football in England to prove yourself elsewhere.

Having spent four years with us, the Scot never really impressed Klopp with his performances to deem himself worthy of a spot in the senior squad. The full-back never really stood a chance against our current left-backs, and it is for the best that he pursues opportunities elsewhere.

We do not currently need cover at left-back, with two impressive performers playing their part so far this season. Barring an injury crisis, Gallacher never seemed ready to displace either Robertson or Tsimikas from their position on the left.
