Liverpool interested in signing defender Jamie Hamilton from Hamilton Academical

According to TEAMtalk (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are one among many clubs interested in prising young defender Jamie Hamilton from Scottish Championship side Hamilton Academical.

The 19-year-old is out of contract with the Scottish side at the end of the season, and there are several Premier League clubs sniffing around for his signature – namely Brighton and Hove Albion, Brentford, Newcastle, and Burnley.

This interest in the Scottish teenager from Liverpool is solely down to the future of defender Nat Phillips. The English centre-back has hardly featured for the Reds this season, and if were to depart the club, Hamilton is touted to be his replacement.

Phillips has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield, with new summer signing Ibrahima Konate slotting in alongside either Virgil Van Dijk or Joel Matip, who are Klopp’s senior defenders in the team. With Joe Gomez also in the mix, Phillips will struggle for game time.

Hamilton may only be 19-years-old, but he has racked up over 50 first-team appearances for his side Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Championship, making him one of the more experienced ones in the squad.

With the Scot expected to leave the Scottish Championship side and run down his contract, the interest in Hamilton will only be heating up as clubs look to get the young talent on a free transfer.

Hamilton’s young age and lack of playing time and experience at the highest level has clearly not deterred Premier League clubs from enquiring about his availability in the summer, which speaks volumes about his talent.

With the buzz surrounding the teenager, we would do well to sign a talented youngster whom they can groom for the future. In Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip, the 19-year-old defender would be learning from the league’s best at close quarters.

Although he would not be expected to slot in right with the first team, Hamilton is definitely a star for the future. Current buzz suggests that Nat Phillips is expected to leave the club in the summer, and Hamilton may certainly be a suitable replacement for the Englishman if he departs.

For a free transfer, this would come as an absolute win for Liverpool if we were to snap him up in the summer. It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming months, given that the interest in Hamilton comes from one of ours leaving for sure.
