Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp expects striker Divock Origi to stay until the end of the season
According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has dismissed rumours about forward Divock Origi departing this month. He expects the striker to stay until the end of the season.
The 26-year-old’s contract expires in the summer, and the Reds have an option to trigger an additional year between now and the end of the season.
Despite reported interest in the Liverpool forward, Klopp said that Origi would stay at Anfield as the club depend on him in the coming months.
“I would say from this moment he will be here and hopefully soon because we could use him.”
It is reported that Origi has not asked to leave the club this month, and Klopp expects the Belgian to stay put until the end of the campaign at the earliest.
Into the last six months of his Liverpool contract, the Belgian striker is free to talk to clubs outside the country this month and has been linked with a move to Italy. Origi has also been a reported target for newly-rich Newcastle United as they look to stave off relegation.
The former Lille man, who has only made four starts this season, is currently out injured and has not trained with the team for a while.
“Div didn’t train, he is still injured so he cannot help us at this moment, but I don’t see any scenario [where he leaves].”
Origi has built a cult status at the club, having cultivated a habit of scoring last-minute winners and popping up to score when needed. However, Klopp has shown little to suggest the Belgian international is anything more than a dependable backup.
Although we potentially risk losing Origi for free this summer by keeping him until the end of the season, Liverpool will need all the firepower they have in the coming games. This is thanks to prolific goalscorers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane being away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Origi may not have what it takes to replace our first choice front three in attack, but there is no questioning the striker’s goalscoring ability. Time and again he has proven critics wrong by scoring for Liverpool when it mattered the most.
Holding onto the Belgian is the smart thing for us to do, and hope that the player continues his trend of scoring for us in the big games to come.
