Transfer News: PL rivals interested in 24-year-old Liverpool defensive ace

Aston Villa could still be interested in securing the services of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Aston Villa still like the option of pursuing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. The English professional footballer has struggled for regular game time this season.

The 24-year-old defender has played only 620 minutes for the Reds this campaign. Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip have been the preferred central defensive partnership that Jurgen Klopp has opted for this season.

The addition of Ibrahima Konate has seen Gomez go further down the pecking order at Anfield and the English defender could be looking for a change in scenery to revive his career. His current contract with the club runs till 2024,

but the defender could be forced to assess his options in lieu of reduced game time at Anfield.
Joe Gomez is on the radar of Aston Villa

The English international has been a dependable option at the back over the last few seasons. He was even the first-choice centre-back along with Van Dijk at one point in time but those days seem like a distant memory at the moment.

At 24, the former Charlton Athletic player still has a lot to offer. He has played 135 matches across all competitions for the Reds to date and has bagged four assists for the Anfield outfit in the process.

The Villains would be looking to take their game to the next level and a player with the experience of Joe Gomez could help a great deal in pursuit of that goal. The fact that Villa are being managed by Liverpool legend Steven Gerard could also be an advantage in their pursuit.

At the moment there isn’t anything concrete and the acquisition of a left-sided centre-back could be more of a priority for the Clarets and Blue at the moment. The English defender has been an integral part of the Reds in the last few years and his availability brings more depth to Klopp’s squad.

That being said, the player would be hungry for more minutes on the pitch and a loan deal could do the player a world of good and help boost morale. Anything at this moment would be too premature but the lure of more first-team minutes could be a tempting proposition for Gomez who has hardly featured in a Red jersey this campaign.
