Premier League clubs set to vote on bringing back the five substitutes rule Jurgen Klopp vouched for
According to the Mirror, Premier League clubs are set to vote on changing the rule on the number of substitutes after Jurgen Klopp in the past spoke out about changing the allowed number from three to five.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had reiterated his desire to change the maximum number of substitutes back to five from three. To validate this idea, Premier League clubs are set to vote on the suggestion to be implemented from next season.
The five substitute rule was introduced in football during the time of the first Covid pandemic to compensate for the workload of players and while other leagues and UEFA have continued using it, the Premier League has reverted back to the usual three substitutions rule.
Klopp has been a long time advocate of the five subs rule, stating that considering the sheer number of matches they play, five substitutes will give managers more leeway when it comes to rotations and managing workloads of players
An idea that divides opinion?
While Klopp has been very vocal about the change in rule with regards to the number of substitutes, there have also been managers like Sean Dyche of Burnley who prefers keeping it down to three.
There is this sense that a five substitute rule could favour the big clubs who have a lot of depth in talent and can unleash more players on a tiring opposition as the game goes on.
With the clubs expected to vote on the rule change, we’ll get to know if it is just Klopp who favours such a change or if other teams want an amendment in the rule as well.
