Tim Wiese has tipped Loris Karius as a potential goalkeeper signing for Werder Bremen

Speaking to BILD (via Fussball News) as quoted by Liverpool Echo, former Germany goalkeeper Tim Wiese has claimed that former club Werder Bremen are making a move for Liverpool outcast Loris Karius.

Karius has fallen out of favour at Anfield since the infamous Champions League 2018 final against Real Madrid. Since then Alisson Becker has replaced the German as the first choice shot-stopper at Liverpool.

Karius meanwhile has had loan moves to both Besiktas and Union Berlin but neither loan has translated into permanent deals and the German shot-stopper finds himself stuck at Merseyside.

Loris Karius has spent the last three seasons out on loan, including a spell at Besiktas.

The 28-year-old has made 49 appearances for the Reds until now. The German shot-stopper joined Liverpool in 2016. However, his time at Liverpool has not gone according to plan with the former Mainz keeper becoming somewhat of a laughing stock at Merseyside.

Karius’ contract is ending in the summer and Wiese has urged his former team to sign up the German outcast

“In the top flight, the club would have to look for a seasoned keeper. For me, Loris Karius would be one for Werder. He’s a free transfer, hasn’t played for a long time. But, in Mainz, he showed what he’s capable of”

A departure long due?

Loris Karius is as far from the first-team picture as it can get and his departure will be the last thing that the Reds would be worried about.

Liverpool have an abundance of goalkeeping options at the club in Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher, Adrian and even a young Brazilian prospect Marcelo Pitaluga. They would not even have to dip into the market for a new goalie.

For Karius though, a fresh start is maybe what he needs to revive his faltering career. The German’s time at Anfield has been an absolute nightmare and a new episode might just be what the doctor ordered for the goalie.

Going back to his home country, Karius has previous experience of playing in the Bundesliga and if Werder Bremen were to sign him, he could turn out to be a good signing for the Bundesliga club.

It remains to be seen if Karius indeed moves to Werder Bremen but what’s really clear is the fact that the German will definitely leave Anfield when his contract expires in the summer.

Karius’s story at Anfield has been a very forgettable one and it’s high time that the chapter is closed for the good.
