Transfer News: Liverpool learn price tag for Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans

According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required) [h/t Liverpool Echo], Liverpool have been told the price tag to land Leicester City midfielder, Youri Tielemans.

The former Monaco man joined Leicester in 2019 initially on loan and eventually on a permanent deal, and since then has gone on to establish himself a permanent fixture in Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The Foxes star is out of contract next year and is yet to pen a new deal with Leicester City. That comes as an obvious concern for them given that he will be in the final year of his contract once this season comes to a halt.

In such a scenario, the Foxes would know that they wouldn’t have a lot of chances to part ways with the ex-Anderlecht midfielder before they risk losing him on a free transfer. This is where the Reds can step in and take advantage.

The 24-year-old has secured 7 goals and 3 assists in 37 games across all competitions this season and it is very evident as to why the former Reds manager would want to keep his star midfielder. His peak moment with the Foxes would perhaps be his FA Cup-winning goal in the final against Chelsea last summer.

Tielemans is said to be keen on playing for a Champions League club and it is claimed that the Foxes could be demanding somewhere around £25m this summer to part ways with the Belgian.

An excellent signing?

Despite the Reds having a plethora of options in midfield, adding a player of Tielemans’ quality to the roster will not be a bad idea, especially when we take the long-term picture into account.

The Belgian international could be a useful replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who left the club for PSG last season. Liverpool famously did not sign anyone in that window or this January to directly replace one of the most consistent players under Klopp in terms of appearances for the club.

At 24, Tielemans is very young and has many many years ahead of him. Under the tutelage of someone like the German manager, the Leicester City midfielder could unlock his full potential and become a truly world-class player.

Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliot have been revelations in the Reds’ midfield this season and could be involved in the set up for a very long time. But as good as they both are, the youngsters started their careers in a bit more attacking role than the ones they currently play. It would be well advised for us to give them time to settle into their roles before burdening them with being first-team starters for us on a regular basis.

Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita are undoubtedly quality players, but have had their fair share of injuries this season. To add to that, James Milner and Jordan Henderson aren’t getting younger.
