Manchester City are pursuing Liverpool target and AS Monaco midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni
According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Manchester City are set to battle against Liverpool for AS Monaco midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni. The Citizens have supposedly made him their top target for next summer with the French midfielder’s current contract expiring in 2024.
The fact that Fernandinho will leave the Etihad at the end of the season may prompt the defending Premier League champions to go after the 22-year-old Monaco midfielder. Man City have built a great reputation for stockpiling talent and could continue that trend next summer.
Liverpool have also been linked with Tchouaméni who has been turning heads in the French League with his impressive performances. The French professional has made 89 appearances, bagging six goals and notching six assists for the Monégasques to date.
He is a sturdy presence in the middle of the park, providing some great cover for the backline. At 22, the Frenchman still has his prime years ahead of him and could become a great long-term asset for the club.
A transfer battle with Man City
The interest from Man City is a worrying sign should we be genuinely interested in securing his services. It is quite evident that the Mancunian club are willing to break the bank should they really like some player.
This should put the Reds on high alert as they assess their options. The Monaco midfielder sounds like the perfect recruit as per the FSG model that prefers buying young and talented players with utmost potential.
At the moment Fabinho is our only out and out defensive midfielder, but we have seen the likes of Hendeson or even Milner dropping deep to help out the team. Hence, a young player like Tchouaméni could be a great acquisition, helping add more depth and quality in that position.

That being said, the player would take some time to adapt to the new conditions, should he make the move to the Premier League. Both Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have shown immense skills in developing youngsters and we could view another stellar battle, off the pitch this time.
Considering our track record, there is no reason why Aurélien Tchouaméni cannot make a name for himself with Liverpool. We have in the last couple of seasons given ample opportunities to youngsters to strut their stuff but the current interest from Manchester City will be a big obstacle should we seriously consider purchasing the young Frenchman.
