The scoreline flattered Benfica to an extent but Liverpool booked their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League following a 3-3 draw at home in the second leg of the last eight.

The Reds went into the game with a two-goal cushion courtesy of their 3-1 win in the first leg. Ibrahima Konate opened the scoring once again as he put Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead in the 21st minute. Liverpool had their chances but saw Benfica draw level thanks to Goncalo Ramos in the 31str minute.

Liverpool came out of the blocks in the second half, with a Roberto Firmino double all but guaranteeing them a spot in the last four. Late goals from Roman Yaremchuk and DEarwin Nunez did make things more interesting and flatter Benfica but it came too little and too late to make a difference.

Klopp made wholesale changes to his side on the night with several key players settling for a role on the bench. It is a testament to the Reds’ strength in depth that they were able to see out the game against admittedly spirited opposition.

Liverpool will now face Villarreal in the semifinals as they look to qualify for a third UCL final under Klopp. Despite the scoreline, it was a job well done for Liverpool’s second string who proved themselves capable of the task.
