Pep Guardiola believes Liverpool hold no psychological advantage in the Premier League title race
Speaking after his side’s 2-3 loss to Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said that the Reds will now have a ‘psychological advantage’ over his team in the Premier League title race.
The Spanish tactician went on to state that he expects the ‘psychological advantage’ to play in favour of Liverpool only if both teams manage to progress to the final of the Champions League where they will then play each other, again.
The Reds managed to beat Guardiola’s men 3-2 in the semi-final of the FA Cup thanks to a brace from Sadio Mane and a goal from Ibrahima Konate. Jurgen Klopp’s men now have a final against Chelsea, yet another one to win the FA Cup.
Speaking about the loss to the Reds and whether this could affect the title race psychologically, Guardiola was adamant that is far from the case.
“Well there are more chances when at the end of the season. It’s just if both teams have reached the Champions League final. And then we will see what happens.”
A title race for the ages?
Liverpool and Manchester City have been subject to title races in the past but the current one is nothing short of spectacular.
Both these teams are separated just by one point with Klopp’s men trailing City by a solitary point. Whilst it is not difficult to catch up, the title is out of Liverpool’s hands at the moment. They will be hoping for the Cityzens to slip up.
Liverpool find themselves in a hunt for an unprecedented quadruple. They have already secured the Carabao Cup and find themselves in yet another final in the FA Cup. They are in a race for the Premier League title and have Villareal to face in the Champions League.
Jurgen Klopp will know that his team will have to be on top of their game. They cannot afford slip ups of any kind.

It remains to be seen if what Pep Guardiola claims is indeed true. One thing that is sure is if Liverpool and Manchester City meet again this season, it will be after the title race has been decided and whoever wins the championship will have the edge in the final of the Champions League, if that.
