Alex McLeish claims Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay will pick Liverpool transfer over Leeds United

Calvin Ramsay will prefer a move to Liverpool over Leeds United if he has the option to choose between those two teams in the summer transfer window. That is the view of ex-Scotland manager Alex McLeish as relayed to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo).

And according to Mail on Sunday (h/t Daily Star), Liverpool are close to finalising a move for Ramsay in what could be a deal in the region of £4million. This comes after a move to Bologna fell through for the player back in January.

The young Scottish full-back has 1 goal and 9 assists in 33 matches across all competitions this season. He has played for an Aberdeen side that is struggling in 10th position in the Scottish Premiership, with their latest match ending in a draw against Hibernian.

Ramsay has been an important part of Jim Goodwin’s side and has piqued the interest of a PL giant in Liverpool. And that doesn’t come as a surprise, given that right now, the Reds lack a natural back-up for Trent Alexander-Arnold down that right-hand side.

And according to McLeish, the 18-year-old Scotland U21 international would choose Liverpool over the likes of Leeds United despite having less of a chance at regular playing time with the Reds- at least in the immediate future.

“I would imagine, if I was in that position right now, I want to go to Liverpool. Because of the magnitude of the club, because of the lack of any chance of relegation. Even though I’d be an understudy to Trent Alexander-Arnold for a couple of years, I’ll get in and out.”

Ramsay to LFC?

McLeish, who has managed Aston Villa and Birmingham City alongside Championship club Nottingham Forest during his time in England, believes that Ramsay would have time to develop himself at Anfield and if, by any chance, makes the cut there, then it would almost be akin to winning the World Cup for him.

“If Liverpool and Leeds are in for him, I would think he’d, all day long, choose Liverpool.”

McLeish’s comments bode well for us because the Reds would do well to sign a good right-back to deputise for Trent. Joe Gomez has played as a right-back and a left-back during his time at LFC but is evidently more comfortable playing at centre-back.

In Ramsay, we would get a young player who may understand that he cannot displace our 23-year-old Englishman down that flank. If he is comfortable stepping in and out of the team, then he would be a useful asset for us.

But for that to happen, the Reds will have to formalise any apparent interest they may have in him. We are fighting for the quadruple this month, despite our draw against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, and would surely target all trophies next season as well- highlighting the need for depth in the squad in all positions.
