Transfer News: Steven Gerrard wants to sign Liverpool star Joe Gomez at Aston Villa this summer
According to the Mirror, Steven Gerrard is eyeing a move for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez at Aston Villa as he eyes a defensive overhaul at Villa Park.
The Liverpool defender has drastically fallen down the pecking order at Anfield after his injury last season. Before Ibrahima Konate’s arrival, Gomez was Virgil van Dijk’s trusted partner in defence for a considerable period of time.
But with Joel Matip keeping fit this season and Konate becoming our first-choice defender alongside VVD in the UEFA Champions League, Gomez is finding starts very hard to come by.
He has become more likely to deputise for Trent Alexander-Arnold down the right-hand side of the pitch than get regular starts at centre-back. He did so against Newcastle United and put in a very strong performance down that flank.
What next for Joe Gomez?
Nevertheless, it now seems that Gerrard is open to giving Gomez a chance to escape Liverpool’s bench as he is apparently eyeing an overhaul in his defence. Tyrone Mings, Kortney Hause, Calum Chambers, and Ezri Konsa are four of their top options at centre-back right now but the quartet has failed to lead Aston Villa to European places this season.
The Villans most recently lost at their home ground in a 2-1 away win for Jurgen Klopp’s title-chasing Reds. Gomez, who signed a six-year contract at Liverpool until 2024 back in 2018, was an unused entity in that game.
The Reds can live without Gomez but it would honestly make no real sense for them to weaken their defence without any need for doing so. After Dejan Lovren’s departure to Zenit St. Petersburg, Liverpool had a season where they were plagued by injuries at the back.
Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips got us over the line but it is clear they are not the ones Jurgen Klopp wants to lead our defence in the future. Phillips has hardly played for us this season while Williams is out on loan at Swansea City.

We will need someone to succeed the imperious Virgil van Dijk once he either retires or leaves the club. Gomez, at 24, certainly has the tools to become that player. He is still one of England’s top centre-backs and unless the Englishman himself wants a move away from Anfield in search of gametime, it makes no real sense for us to push him out.
