Transfer News: Liverpool to target Gleison Bremer of Torino if Joe Gomez leaves amidst Aston Villa interest

According to Italian outlet Tuttomercato (h/t the Mirror), Liverpool are eyeing Torino star Gleison Bremer as a potential signing in case Joe Gomez leaves the club.

The Reds defender has been linked with a move away from Anfield, with Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa eager to sign him. And if the Englishman leaves the club, Bremer is one of the candidates who can replace him.

Liverpool are apparently ‘readying’ a £30million bid for the 25-year-old Brazilian. Gomez has recently become the club’s fourth-choice centre-back and a backup right-back.

The ex-Charlton Athletic defender was a regular alongside Virgil van Dijk a couple of years ago but after last season, has fallen down the pecking order. Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are both Klopp’s preferred options when he needs a partner for our towering Dutchman.

Bremer to LFC?

This would obviously not please Gomez considering a player of his age and talent is arguably wasted on the bench. For the Reds, it makes perfect sense to want four senior-centre backs, especially after their injury crisis last summer.

But when it comes to the player, it can impact his career. Gomez recently played against Newcastle United in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold down the right-hand side and did a very good job on both ends of the pitch in a 1-0 win for us.

He is clearly good enough to get a shout for making Gareth Southgate’s England team that travels to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup later this year. But he needs regular playing time to showcase that he is still a top-quality defender.

Bremer is just a year older than Gomez and is a regular at Torino. Having not made a senior appearance for Brazil and being in the prime years of his career, it would be interesting to see if he settles for Gomez’s role were the Reds to sign him.

Even if he replaces Matip or Konate, it would mean relegating one of our senior centre-backs to the bench for long periods of time. It would be for the best if the Reds can convince Gomez to stay on and manage his gametime in a way that keeps him happy but if that can’t happen, signing a replacement is necessary to protect our depth at the back.
