Transfer News: Liverpool plan to include Fabio Carvalho in senior team this summer

According to Theo Squires of the Liverpool Echo in a Q&A session, Liverpool plan to include Fabio Carvalho in their senior team when he arrives from Fulham this summer.

According to the Athletic (Subscription Required), the Portuguese wonderkid has agreed to join Liverpool in a £7.7million deal that expires only in the summer of 2027. Keeping that in mind, it’s understandable that fans would be wondering what role he can play under Jurgen Klopp next season.

The German manager gives young players a chance to impress if he sees their talent. Tyler Morton, Curtis Jones, and Harvey Elliott are just some of the recent examples. But being 19, it is not completely illogical to wonder if he first goes through the development teams to make his way into the senior side.

One Liverpool fan wondered the same and asked Squires what plans LFC have for the young Portuguese- if he goes straight into the senior team or the youth setup. The journalist’s answer was plain and direct.

“He’ll be in the first team and rightly so after a great season in the Championship. Expect him to fill that Origi/Minamino role in the squad as back-up forward for now. Will get chances in pre-season and cup games, then Liverpool will go from there.”

What to expect?

Klopp is here to stay for a while but there will come a time when the Reds will have to plan for life without him. It seems the German is already assembling the parts for the next great Liverpool side, with the likes of Jones, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Elliott, and now Carvalho already a part of it.

It is hard to imagine Carvalho getting regular minutes. A good pre-season, however, can at least ensure Klopp uses the kid in domestic competitions and maybe gives him a couple of Premier League appearances.

A breakout PL season can also not be ruled out. Harvey Elliott, who is the same age as Carvalho and arrived from the same London-based club, was trusted with starts during the start of the season before his horrid injury- which he has now recovered from.

We never really signed a traditional number 10 once Philippe Coutinho left. Instead, Klopp trusted a midfield three with solid players who could contribute off the ball as well as they contribute on it. Whether Carvalho, who has largely played as an out-and-out attacking midfielder in 36 Championship games this season, can change that in the long run remains to be seen.
