Opponent Watch: Hasenhuttl gives Southampton injury latest before Liverpool clash

Injury News: Ralph Hasenhuttl gives latest Southampton update before Liverpool clash

Speaking in his pre-match conference, as summarised by BBC, Ralph Hasenhuttl claimed he was hopeful that Stuart Armstrong and Fraser Forster will return for the game against Liverpool.

The duo missed training last week due to joint pains while Tino Livramento, who joined from Chelsea last summer, has undergone surgery that ‘went well‘. He is, of course, fully ruled out for the PL clash against the Reds tomorrow night.

Forster is an able goalkeeper who, on his day, is capable of shutting out attackers and keeping clean sheets. Alex McCarthy is his deputy, but it remains to be seen if his services will be required against Liverpool after he was hit for four at Anfield in our 4-0 win last November.

Stuart Armstrong is one of Hasenhuttl’s most reliable midfielders and is undoubtedly a big part of their midfield set-up. Both he and Forster played in Southampton’s latest 3-0 loss against Brentford.

Early Southampton team news

Livramento, meanwhile, has been replaced by Kyle Walker-Peters down that right-hand side, with the ex-Tottenham Hotspur defender doing a decent job in defence. The Reds have been roped back into the title race after the developments yesterday.

When we dropped points against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, it was safe to assume Man City were going to wrap the title up in the next couple of games. Their big wins in recent weeks have also beefed up their goal difference to a point where it is very hard to catch up with them.

But West Ham United’s heroic draw yesterday at the London Stadium means that if a few things go Liverpool’s way in the next couple of weeks, they could very well win the quadruple. The Reds would need to win both their games and hope City don’t win against Aston Villa.

Liverpool took off Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk against Chelsea in the FA Cup final and with the Merseysiders playing 2 hours of football at Wembley, it is likely that our German manager switches up the squad for the game against Southampton.
