Injury News: Jurgen Klopp gives the latest on Liverpool star Joe Gomez after Southampton win

Speaking to the media after Liverpool beat Southampton (h/t Liverpool Echo), Jurgen Klopp gave the latest injury update on Joe Gomez– who was prematurely subbed off at St Mary’s.

The English defender has enjoyed some time out in the sun down the right-hand flank when Trent Alexander-Arnold has been rested. He played in the win against Newcastle United and was picked for the must-win game against Southampton.

He had a decent game before being involved in a coming-together with a Saints player. Gomez, who hasn’t had the best injury record during his time at LFC, was visibly distressed.

Liverpool players passed the ball around with no tempo to labour to the half-time whistle, as the ex-Charlton Athletic defender was ejected from the field, leaving us down to 10 men. Jordan Henderson then came on in his place when the players returned for the second 45, with Milner shifting out wide in defence.

“I hope we were lucky. Joe himself has pain but not too much. He got a real shock to the system in the foot. But he’s sitting in the dressing room and when I spoke to him he was in a good mood. Maybe we were probably lucky but we have to figure that out.”

Gomez was apparently seen after the game getting on the team bus in protective gear on his foot. Klopp played down the injury in his comments above, but it remains to be seen if he is fit for the PL game against Wolves this weekend, and the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid.

The 24-year-old’s potential unavailability against Bruno Lage’s men could force Klopp to go with Trent down the right flank. Any injuries at Anfield against Wolves would then impact the club’s chances against Los Blancos in Paris on 28th May.

Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah were all left out of the squad for the game against So’ton. Hopefully, the quartet is back for the Reds by the time we prepare for the UCL final because while there is still hope when it comes to the PL title, it is very hard to see Manchester City not beat Aston Villa at home.

The UCL final is the one game we have in our own hands. Gomez may not have started to begin with, but offers a very good option for Klopp off the bench- with his ability to play as a centre-back and a right-back.
