Injury News: Boost for Liverpool as Joe Gomez could return by UEFA Champions League final vs Real Madrid after latest scans
According to The Liverpool Echo, Joe Gomez has had scans on the ankle injury he sustained against Southampton, and the results indicate that he could return in time for the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid.
Reds fans are already sweating over the fitness of Fabinho Tavares in time for the big occasion in Paris while Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are also working towards regaining full match fitness by 28th May.
And that is why it was all the more tense when Mohammed Salisu’s challenge floored Gomez in our 2-1 away win against the Saints. Jurgen Klopp’s baffled reaction on the sidelines spoke volumes as the Reds seemed to have had one too many injury scares in recent weeks.
The Englishman was taken off the pitch with his international colleague, Jordan Henderson, making his way onto the field at the start of the second 45. There were always going to be concerns regarding his injury given his ankle was swollen.
Will Gomez play vs Madrid?
Some would have even feared the worst with potential ligament damage a possibility. But as it turns out, there are ‘no signs of serious damage’ after the latest scans. While the ankle remains bruised, the road to recovery may well be completed before the final against Los Blancos.
With Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate our first picks in defence in Europe, it is clear he was perhaps never going to start against Carlo Ancelotti’s men regardless. Nevertheless, the versatility that he offers from the bench is valuable, especially as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s backup.
Fans would remember Gomez’s serious ankle injury suffered towards the tail end of the 2017/18 season. An operation meant he was ruled out for the UCL final against Madrid in Kyiv- and there is a chance it could be repeated again.
He did go on to play in the final of the same competition next year when he came on as a last-minute substitute against Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds won 2-0 on the night and Gomez finally got his hands on the gold medal.

Hopefully, the 24-year-old star is fit to make the bench against Los Galacticos. Jurgen Klopp has recently described his fringe players as ‘Ferraris in the garage’ after the away win at St Mary’s and we are sure to be boosted if one of the newer models in Gomez is fueled up and ready to go come 28th May.
