Transfer News: Aurelien Tchouameni chooses Real Madrid over Liverpool

French journalist Julien Maynard has relayed @RMCSport‘s claims on Twitter (h/t Liverpool Echo) to suggest that Aurelien Tchouameni has chosen Real Madrid as his next club, despite recent links with a move to Liverpool.

That would come as a blow to the Reds but hopefully, this isn’t the end of the saga. Until the clubs announce a potential deal being agreed upon between them, anything is possible. We have seen that time and again in this sport.

At 22, Tchouameni has become one of France’s most wanted footballers. He had a wonderful season with Philippe Clement’s AS Monaco, guiding them to a third-place finish this season.

This means a spot in the UEFA Champions League next season is still up for grabs for the Ligue 1 side. But it seems like Tchouameni wants to leave Stade Louis II in order to take the next step in his career.

Where next for Tchouameni?

Madrid missed out on signing Kylian Mbappe this month, with the Frenchman signing a bumper deal to stay at PSG. It would then be safe to assume that Los Blancos now have the cash to spend this summer.

Madrid, who are in the Champions League final set to take place in Paris on 28th May this month, signed a young French midfielder just last year in Eduardo Camavinga. Tchouameni being added to the mix would mean future-proofing their midfield to a great extent.

Luka Modric and Toni Kroos aren’t getting younger, while Casemiro looks like he can use some competition in the number six role. But a similar situation is unfolding at Anfield, albeit at a different pace.

Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson are slowly approaching the twilight years of their playing career, while Fabinho has had his ups and downs in recent months. If not Tchouameni, the Reds would be wise to sign someone in central midfield because this is the one place most LFC fans would want to see reinforced going forward.
