Speaking before his country’s game against Benin yesterday (h/t Metro), Sadio Mane grabbed headlines when he claimed that his Liverpool future depended on what Senegal fans wanted him to do.
Addressing his future at Anfield, the former Southampton star claimed that ’60 to 70%’ of his countrymen wanted him to leave Anfield. Asked to clarify those comments, Mane claims that he was joking and that his statements were taken out of context.
“I spoke yesterday while joking with a bit of humour and it was everywhere. I think we’ll stop there. Liverpool is a club I respect a lot. The fans adopted me since day one. Regarding the future, we’ll see.”
Senegal won their game against Benin by a 3-1 scoreline, where Mane scored a hat-trick. Two of those goals came from the penalty spot but he was pretty impressive in that match.
Sadio is yet to renew his contract at LFC and has seen strong interest in his services from Bayern Munich. The Reds lost to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final last month and that could well be the last game Mane played in a Liverpool shirt.
His silence regarding his future is telling. If he was sure to stay and extend his deal, surely he would have hinted in that direction.
But it seems that Liverpool fans should start accepting the possibility that Mane could very well leave the Reds. Mohamed Salah’s long-term future is up in the air as well.
The Egyptian superstar is out of contract in 2023 and is linked with a switch to Barcelona, according to the Mirror. Mane’s clarification, meanwhile, doesn’t really give LFC fans a lot to work with.
His respect for the club and the fans has never really been in doubt. With regards to his future, Mane continued to remain coy and it seems that we will have to wait before there is some clarity on that front.
