According to Liverpool Echo, Liverpool superstar Sadio Mane is now the all-time leading goal-scorer for Senegal after his hat-trick against Benin.
Mane netted thrice in a 3-1 win for the Lions of Teranga in matchday one of their AFCON qualification journey. He scored twice in the opening 22 minutes, with his third goal coming just after Benin were reduced to 10 men in the second half.
An 88th-minute goal only proved to be a consolation for the visitors. The treble ensures that Mane is now Senegal’s all-time leading scorer in international football, overtaking the 31-goal tally amassed by ex-Premier League striker Henri Camara.
At 30, it is likely that Mane will build further on that record given that he still has a number of years left at the top. It is good to see the former Southampton and RB Salzburg star in the headlines for his performances.
Otherwise, his name has dominated headlines amidst strong links to Bayern Munich this summer. The Bavarian giants want Mane, with the African superstar entering the last 12 months of his current LFC deal.
The Senegalese star led his country to their first-ever AFCON title earlier this year, when they beat Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in the final. They are also set to be on the plane to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup later this year.
They are drawn with Qatar, Ecuador, and the Netherlands, which means there is every chance Mane takes on Virgil van Dijk on the international stage. However, if he remains a Liverpool player by then remains to be seen.
Ever since his move from the Saints back in 2016, Mane has been a vital cog in Jurgen Klopp’s system. He is a player that would be hard to replace, with his versatility, quality, and a knack for scoring on the big occasions a rare combination to find.
