Jurgen Klopp tells why he is ‘thankful’ to be part of Liverpool as club celebrates 130th birthday

Jurgen Klopp, in his tribute to the club on its 130th birthday yesterday on the official LFC website, mentioned why he counts himself lucky to be a part of Liverpool.

The German manager seems like he was always meant to be a Liverpool boss. The German icon had vowed to take time off football when he parted ways with Borussia Dortmund.

But he was roped back in when the Reds came calling during the first months of the 2015/16 season. And just like that, having rejected an approach from rivals Manchester United in the past, Jurgen was a Liverpool manager after Brendan Rodgers’ departure.

Things have changed for the club since then, and most of it is down to the towering ex-Dortmund boss. Talking about his time at the club, Klopp mentioned that he is just thankful to be a part of the amazing journey that is Liverpool Football Club.

“It feels so intense in the best way – how close we got over the years with our supporters. It’s like when you have these moments where you can look in the eyes – you can only see a few – but if you see these eyes, it’s pure joy and enthusiasm.”

A love affair

Klopp’s connection with the fans is there for all to see. He loves the city and the city loves him. Those fist pumps in the direction of our supporters at the end of each game where we get a favourable result show just what this club means to him.

“That’s what it’s all about actually. Having a chance to be part of such an emotional journey, I think it’s really important. I’m proud, yes, but I’m more thankful that I’m allowed to be part of it.”

The last time our fans would have felt such a connection with any Reds manager would be Kenny Dalglish during his second managerial spell at Anfield. But while King Kenny couldn’t really find a lot of success during that stint, Klopp has simply changed the club’s fortunes.

He is here to stay until 2026 after extending his stay at the club by two years earlier this campaign. Whenever it seems like the German could depart Liverpool, the city and its affection for their manager seems to draw him back in.
