Journo: Liverpool star set to sign new contract on reduced terms

James Milner set for new Liverpool contract on reduced terms

According to journalist Paul Joyce as relayed by Fabrizio Romano, James Milner is on the verge of signing a new Liverpool contract on reduced terms.

The Italian transfer expert claimed that it was Jurgen Klopp who wanted the midfielder to stay. His current deal was set to expire this summer but it is believed he will sign a one-year extension until 2023.

This shouldn’t really come as a shock to many. At 36, Milner wasn’t really going to get a long-term deal on the same or improved terms.

Despite all his ability, he is on the wane and nearing the end of his playing career. The Reds would also not keep him on board for one year with the view of making him a regular first-team starter.

Milner to stay

He was used as a utility player in the latest season and that role is expected to stick if he stays at Anfield beyond this summer. Milner is versatile and in his performances, such as against Newcastle United and Southampton towards the end of this season, he showed he still has what it takes to play at the top level.

Milner’s voice is an important one in the dressing room. Having been awarded the MBE on the Queen’s Silver Jubilee earlier this month, his status as a legend of the sport is not up for debate.

Having won nearly every major club trophy under the sun while playing in England, Milner has represented teams such as Newcastle United, Manchester City, and LFC with distinction.

He was also an important part of England’s national team between 2009 and 2016. All in all, it is a smart call by the Reds if they have indeed managed to keep Milner for another year. His experience in PL football is second to none right now.

The salary is apparently reduced and the commitment isn’t long term, which makes this potential extension a safe affair.
