According to transfer news on the Times (Subscription Required) [h/t Metro], Liverpool have rejected a bid from Bayern Munich for Sadio Mane.
The Bavarians apparently put forth a package of £21million in initial fees plus £4million in add-ons. The Reds, however, rejected the offer knowing the worth of the player rests above that valuation.
The offer is almost disrespectful. Take away the proposed add-ons and Bayern are effectively offering Liverpool a fee that doesn’t reflect Mane’s abilities and worth to this LFC side.
He may be 30 but the Senegal international has shown that age is just a number for him. He was our main man up front since AFCON this season, a tournament he won with the Lions of Teranga, and continues to showcase his longevity and versatility.
The former Southampton star is still going strong on both club and international level, ending the season with Liverpool as an EFL Cup and FA Cup winner and scoring a hat-trick for his country against Benin last weekend.
The way he played as a centre-forward for us in Roberto Firmino’s absence showcases that he has what it takes to be a number nine in a way similar to Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star was, like Mane, a left-winger but switched to playing as a striker at Juventus and Manchester United.
Robert Lewandowski’s desire to leave Bayern is no secret. And the German club would know that replacing a man with 50 goals in all club competitions this season is not going to be an easy task.
The Reds must make use of this desperation to demand the highest value they can for a player of Mane’s stature and age profile. Not to mention, he still has one year left on his deal at Anfield that expires next year.
