Transfer News: Liverpool will allow Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to leave this summer

According to Paul Joyce of the Times (Subscription Required), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be allowed to leave Liverpool this summer.

The English midfielder has found playing time impossible to come by after the Reds’ 1-0 win in the FA Cup against Nottingham Forest back in March. Signed from Arsenal back in 2017 for a £40million fee, fans had big expectations from him on Merseyside.

But he has clearly fallen down the pecking order in recent seasons under Jurgen Klopp. Injuries haven’t helped his cause at Anfield and with his contract entering into its final 12 months, Liverpool are willing to let him leave this summer

Naby Keita is also in the last year of his deal with LFC but the Reds expect him to put pen to paper on a new deal. The Guinean has been a breath of fresh air this season, finding his feet in our midfield after keeping fit for an extended period of time.

Farewell Alex

As for the Ox, it seems like curtains for his time at Liverpool. Aston Villa are one team linked with a move for the 28-year-old star, with the Birmingham-based club being managed by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool’s stance makes sense. It would be crazy to keep a midfielder that isn’t in Klopp’s plans and then lose him for nothing when you can offload him beforehand.

It would be best for both parties to part ways at the earliest. For the Reds, it will be one name off the wage bill, while Oxlade-Chamberlain can look to reignite his stagnated career elsewhere.

At his age, it isn’t the end of the road for his playing days- not at all. He can still make a name for himself elsewhere and while a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup looks unlikely, he could hope to force his way back into the international set-up sometime in the future.
