Transfer News: Liverpool to sell five players but won’t sign a midfielder this summer

According to the Mirror (h/t the Express), Liverpool could sell five players this summer but will not sign a midfielder after failing to lure Aurelien Tchouameni to Anfield.

The Reds are apparently open to trimming the squad and could show the exit door to Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino, Nat Phillips, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Neco Williams during this window.

The names in that list won’t surprise any LFC fans. Apart from Mane, the remaining quartet has been far removed from regular first-team action and the Senegalese star has, at least on paper, potentially been replaced to some extent by Darwin Nunez.

The part that could concern LFC fans is where it is claimed that the Reds are not looking to sign a midfielder this summer. They made an effort for Tchouameni, but the Frenchman made the switch to Real Madrid.

If we were eager to bring in a star like the Frenchman, why delay the plan to strengthen in the middle of the park? It is claimed that the Reds want to wait for a midfielder that fits their profile.

That is concerning, especially if the Ox could be shown the door as well. James Milner’s contract renewal means very little given his age and role in the team.

If that is the case, why not keep the Englishman and give him a shot at first-team football? He was impressive in his initial seasons on Merseyside and still shows flashes of brilliance every now and then.

He hasn’t been consistent nor has he been given a single minute for the Reds since March 20th this year, but it is better to make use of a player still in the squad rather than weakening that area of the squad.
