As per Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (h/t Liverpool Echo), the representative of Gavi, Ivan de la Pena, has held ‘positive’ talks with Barcelona over a new contract.
The 17-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move to Liverpool, but it now seems like he will renew his deal at Camp Nou. His current contract has a release clause of around £43million.
That doesn’t seem like a very big amount, even if it is for a teenager, given Gavi’s talent. But there is no doubt that Barca would want to regain control over his future if any new terms are agreed upon.
Having come through La Masia, it was always going to be tough to uproot the Spaniard from his childhood team. The Reds also missed out on Aurelien Tchouameni earlier this month.
The France international signed a contract with Real Madrid, which saw the Reds miss out on an important target in midfield. The Reds now have a loaded attack which has gotten even more complete after the signing of Darwin Nunez.
Midfield seems like the one area we can strengthen right now. But it seems that Liverpool can soon strike Gavi off their list of potential, given he is close to renewing his deal at Barca.
Already a full international for Luis Enrique’s Spain, the youngster’s talent and potential isn’t up for debate. But the Reds don’t lack talented youngsters in that area of the pitch as well.
Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott may have been wingers a few years back, but they have done well in central midfield for Jurgen Klopp. To add to that, LFC have added another young midfielder in Fabio Carvalho this summer.
Among these three, the Reds would hope that at least one of them comes to the fore and takes the mantle from our current starters in order to lead the midfield line in the future. If not, there is always the winter and summer transfer window next year.
