Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez explains serious reason behind his social media stance

In an interview with the Mirror, new Liverpool signing Darwin Nunez admitted that he has severely restricted his usage of social media due to past experiences.

The 22-year-old star made the switch from SL Benfica this summer for a fee that could touch €100million with all add-ons. It is very common for football stars to have a big social media presence.

But rarely do we see most of them using it as a common individual would. There can be, of course, many reasons behind it.

However, one major reason is the amount of negativity that floats around on such platforms- unchecked and unregulated. Nunez felt the full effects of it in his past, as he explains why he went on to restrict his usage of social media.

“I used to look at the (social media) networks a lot – but then I saw comments that I didn’t like. They actually made me feel sick. The criticism started to get me down and I had to speak to the national team psychologist Axel Ocampo.”

Fans are passionate but some of them don’t know where to draw the line. A few shouts here and there in the stadium can go unnoticed by the players given how loud it gets in there and the distance between them and the supporters.

Nunez to be the next big thing?

But on social media, such hate can be unavoidable. And Nunez isn’t even that mature. At his age, it is easy to let such things get to you and emotionally impact you.

“Now I don’t turn my cellphone on in the dressing room to read what is being said about me. I only turn my phone on after games to speak with my family and friends. I will only listen to the people who have been supportive.”

The narrative can change quickly on social media. One bad miss or one bad game, and the player comes under a lot of stick- with other like-minded people consuming such content and propagating it even further.

With the money and the success, comes the spotlight. While there will be many who will back and support Nunez, there would be a few who may not have anything good to say about him.
