Liverpool to now focus on new contracts for four players including Joe Gomez

Liverpool to now focus on new contracts for Naby Keita, Joe Gomez, Harvey Elliott, and Diogo Jota

According to news on the Mirror, Liverpool and Julian Ward have now shifted their focus on handing out new contracts to four stars- Naby Keita, Joe Gomez, Harvey Elliott, and Diogo Jota.

The situations surrounding the quartet’s deal are a bit different. The English centre-back is set to become a free agent in 2024. Despite not getting enough playing time this season, his age profile means that he can be an important player for our future.

Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk, as good as they are, cannot keep playing forever. Keita, meanwhile, becomes a free agent next year- just like Mohamed Salah.

Harvey Elliott has been fast-tracked into the Liverpool first team.

So much focus has been on Salah’s new deal that focus seems to have shifted from the Guinea star’s situation. At 27, he continues to be an important part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans and his box-to-box playing style is a potent weapon to have in our arsenal.

Transfer window still not over

Jota’s deal expires in 2025 with the striker having signed for us from Wolves back in 2020. Harvey Elliott, the youngster we brought in from Fulham a couple of years ago, still has four years left on his deal.

But one can safely assume that any new deal for the English midfielder would be more of an attempt to better his salary as compared to worrying about his immediate future. He has progressed a lot since coming to Merseyside and a new contract must reflect that.

The Reds have already signed Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho this summer, while Calvin Ramsay is close to joining. But as important as it is to sign new players, keeping the current ones happy is also an equally important task.

More Liverpool News:

The age profiles of the four players mentioned above make them an important part of our immediate and even long-term future. It remains to be seen if all four of them sign new deals this summer itself but it is good to know that the club has at least started working towards making it happen.
