The day many Liverpool fans dread has arrived, as Sadio Mane has officially completed his move to Bayern Munich, as confirmed by Liverpool FC’s official website.
The Senegalese superstar was set to enter the last year of his contract with the Reds and seemingly wanted a move to Bayern as soon as he heard there was interest from them.
That’s according to the former Southampton man himself, who admitted to BILD journalist Christian Falk (h/t Daily Star for quotes) that the German giants were the ‘right club at the right time’ for him.
“When my agent first told me about Bayern’s interest, I was immediately excited. I saw myself there right away. For me it was the right club at the right time. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and the team is always fighting for every title.”
This brings to an end a six-year association between Mane and the Reds. The fondness with which the Senegalese star has joined Bayern is, of course, a great thing to see.
But Liverpool fans would feel a bit sad when they reflect on how things ended. There was no farewell game for Sadio, no guard of honour- they did not have the chance to say goodbye to him properly.
We all believed that Liverpool was something very special for Mane- like the Senegalese winger is for us. And while it may have been one of the best stints of his professional career, we are still just one of the many clubs he has played for.
Metz gave Mane his chance in France while RB Salzburg really gave him the exposure he needed to get a move to Southampton. The Saints were then an important stepping stone in his career which led to a move to Anfield.
And now, his journey continues with a move to Germany- a country that borders Austria, where he has played before. It isn’t exactly unchartered territory in that regard, but it still is a new challenge for him.
We wish Mane all the success in his move to the Bundesliga and as long as he doesn’t score against us, he can bank on Liverpool fans’ support for the rest of his career.
