According to Liverpool Echo, Ben Davies is set to hand Liverpool a ‘comfortable profit’ as Celtic and Middlesbrough show their interest in the defender.
Davies’ signing came at a time when the Reds were desperate for a defender. With the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip suffering crucial injuries in the 2020/21 season, the decision to sign the Preston North End icon seemed sensible.
Along with Ozan Kabak, the Englishman joined the Reds on deadline day in January and while the Turkish defender saw some time out in the sun, Davies failed to get a single minute
for us- not just during that campaign, but in the one following that as well.Davies, who has experience playing in League Two, League One, and the Championship, is yet to feature in a single Premier League game. It is clear as daylight that he has no future at Liverpool.
Nat Phillips, Rhys Williams, Kabak, and even Fabinho were preferred over the 26-year-old Englishman in the months following his move to Merseyside. Not only have our centre-backs recovered since then, but we added Ibrahima Konate to our ranks last summer.
A move to Celtic or Middlesbrough could see Davies get his career back on track. The Scottish team are the dominant force in their country barring occasional competition from Rangers in the past decade or so.
‘Boro, meanwhile, would be looking to seal promotion to the PL next season. The Reds signed Davies for £1.6million and if they can make a profit on that, it would make the transfer a success- at least from a financial perspective.
It would also serve Liverpool as a reminder to be careful with the players they sign and not let things come down to panic signings. If Liverpool had replaced the outgoing Dejan Lovren in the summer of 2020, perhaps they wouldn’t have felt the entire blow of the injury crisis the following season.
