LFC Transfer News: Liverpool want to exploit the contract situation of Matthijs de Ligt at Juventus

As per Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are ‘ready’ to exploit the situation of Matthijs de Ligt, with Juventus failing to tie him down to a new contract.

The 22-year-old Netherlands international has made himself an important figure in Juve’s backline. With Giorgio Chiellini’s exit this summer, it is clear that de Ligt’s influence is only expected to grow in his team’s backline.

But as it turns out, Juve are not willing to pay the former Ajax Amsterdam the same wages he is on right now. He earns €8m annually, and I Bianconeri are refusing to match that valuation in a new deal.

That is certainly an odd approach to take for a player who has proved his worth since his high-profile move from the Netherlands. At 22, his agents would at least expect Juventus- a giant in European football- to match his client’s wages in any new deal, if not better that amount.

Do LFC need de Ligt?

While the potential reasons behind such an approach are nothing that Liverpool fans should concern themselves with, it still comes as a boost for our team if they really want to sign Virgil van Dijk’s international teammate in the near future.

It is claimed that the Reds are ready to exploit this situation, with Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City also showing interest in the centre-back. An imposing presence in the box on both ends, de Ligt is a smart customer in possession as well.

But regardless of that, Liverpool currently have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joel Matip vying for gametime. But the Dutchman and the Cameroonian aren’t getting any younger.

If de Ligt is prepared to rotate at Liverpool and then wait to be a successor for one of our senior stars, then this would be a superb one for us. Otherwise, we can instead start putting more trust in Joe Gomez.
