Liverpool to receive £1.5million as Taiwo Awoniyi is set to join Nottingham Forest

Former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi is close to joining Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin, according to Liverpool Echo, and the Reds are expected to receive part of the sum if the deal goes through.

The club from West Bridgford is expected to sign the Nigerian striker for £17.5million. The Tricky Trees have been promoted back to the English top-flight after a 23-year absence.

And they will be hoping the 24-year-old striker can help them keep their Premier League status alive at the end of the upcoming season.

Liverpool had a 10% sell-on clause on Awoniyi when they sold him to the German club in 2021. The Reds are now expected to receive a part of the sum as the striker is close to coming back to England.

If the Tricky Trees do end up signing him, which now looks like they will, then Liverpool will be in line to receive £1.5million for the Nigerian’s transfer from Union Berlin.

Good piece of business

Liverpool signed Awoniyi in 2015 for just £400k

. But the Nigerian did not feature for the Reds due to work permit issues and was sent out on loan to different teams before the Anfield side decided to sell him to Union Berlin for £6.5million last summer.

Liverpool are set to receive even more money from the sale of the player as Awoniyi is close to sealing a move back to England.

The Nigerian impressed many because of his performances last season. The 24-year-old scored 20 goals for the Bundesliga side in all competitions, helping them finish 5th in the league.

Now, Forest will hope the player can replicate the same form for them as they get ready for their first Premier League game of the new season on 6 August and Awoniyi will hope to make his long-awaited English top-flight debut.

Should the Reds regret letting go of a talented striker like him? Perhaps that answer will become a bit clearer if he continues to perform in the Premier League.
