Paul Merson berates Liverpool for selling Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich

Sports pundit Paul Merson has criticised Liverpool for selling Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Making his views known on Sportskeeda (h/t Liverpool Echo), the Arsenal legend said that he didn’t understand the Anfield club’s decision to sell the Senegalese.

“I can’t for the life of me understand why they’ve allowed him to move to Bayern Munich.

“If you look at his record, he never really scored the third, fourth or fifth goal of the game – his goals always won Liverpool points.”

The former Gunners forward was especially surprised by the amount Liverpool sold the 30-year-old for. Given that Mane still has a few top years left in him, the Gunners legend’s views are understandable.

Merson praised Mane’s consistency at the Merseyside club and claimed the former Reds superstar’s absence would be noticed next season. What really seemed to impress the 54-year-old was the AFCON champion’s work rate and versatility.

“He works his socks off and does what it says on the tin, but most importantly, his versatility has been unbelievable under Klopp.

Merson believes it would’ve been better for Liverpool to keep their star man

“I don’t see the value in this transfer at all for Liverpool. I know his contract was set to expire next summer, but they should have still kept him instead of selling for a fee believed to be in the region of £30 million.

Mane’s decision should be respected

While the former English forward does have a point about Mane’s impact at Liverpool, it was apparently the Senegalese that wanted to part ways with the club after enjoying six fruitful years at the club.

The 30-year-old won every major title with the team in his time at Anfield. Scoring 120 goals and assisting 48 more in 269 appearances for the Reds, Mane will go down as a Liverpool legend. The Senegal national’s partnership with Mohamed Salah will forever be cherished by supporters who viewed him in action.
